USS Arleigh Burke enters Spanish dry dock for maintenance

The US Navy destroyer USS Arleigh Burke (DDG 51) has entered dry dock at the Navantia shipyard in Cadiz, Spain. This maneuver represents a significant milestone in expanding the US Navy’s deployed maintenance capabilities within Europe.

As part of NATO’s missile shield and stationed at the Rota Naval Base, the destroyer is undergoing scheduled repairs and modernization. The process includes upgrades to the ship’s hull, propellers, shafts, combat systems, propulsion, and electronics. This regional maintenance approach aims to reduce reliance on distant American facilities, accelerate turnaround times, and increase the material readiness of warships deployed in the 6th Fleet area of operations.

US military and civilian personnel from the Deployed Regional Maintenance Center are working alongside Navantia industrial partners. The USS Arleigh Burke is one of five US destroyers currently stationed at Rota, with a sixth vessel, the USS John Basilone, expected to join the maintenance program this month.
