The USS Benfold, an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer, experienced a significant power outage in the South China Sea starting on July 24. An engineering failure involving the ship's generators caused a total loss of electrical power that lasted for approximately four days.

The outage disabled essential systems, including air conditioning, galley services, flushing toilets, and the production of potable water. These conditions were exacerbated by high regional temperatures ranging between 32 and 37 degrees Celsius. During the crisis, the USS Robert Smalls provided hot meals to the Benfold's crew to assist with the lack of onboard kitchen services.

The disabled vessel was towed to Subic Bay in the Philippines for emergency repairs. Following the completion of technical work on August 8, the USS Benfold returned to service and departed for Yokosuka, Japan. The U.S. Navy is currently investigating the exact cause of the generator failure.
