USS Benfold loses power for four days in South China Sea
The USS Benfold, an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer, suffered a major engineering failure involving its generators on July 24 while operating in the South China Sea. The resulting power outage lasted four days, leaving the crew of approximately 300 sailors without air conditioning, functioning toilets, hot food, or potable water. During the incident, temperatures in the region reached between 32 and 37 degrees Celsius.
The vessel was supported by the George Washington carrier strike group, and the cruiser USS Robert Smalls provided meals to the crew. The USS Benfold was eventually towed by contracted tugboats to Subic Bay, Philippines, arriving on July 28. After receiving maintenance from Navy specialists and being provided with shore-based lodging and food, the ship restored its power on July 30. Repairs were completed by August 7, and the destroyer resumed normal operations on August 8.
This incident follows a similar loss of power and propulsion experienced by the USS Higgins in the Indo-Pacific in late April. The Navy is currently investigating the cause of the Benfold's generator failure. The event has drawn attention to the operational strain on the U.S. Navy as it manages multiple global commitments, including ongoing operations in the Middle East.
