USS Colorado designated as first US submarine for AUKUS rotation

The United States has designated the USS Colorado (SSN 788), a Virginia-class nuclear-powered fast-attack submarine, as the first vessel to join the Submarine Rotational Force-West (SRF-West) in Western Australia. The deployment is scheduled to begin in late 2027 at the HMAS Stirling naval base.

This move represents a significant milestone under the AUKUS defense pact between Australia, the United States, and the United Kingdom. The rotational force is projected to host up to four US Virginia-class submarines and one UK Astute-class submarine. The initiative aims to strengthen collective deterrence in the Indo-Pacific and assist Australia in developing the technical expertise, infrastructure, and regulatory capabilities required to operate and maintain its own future fleet of conventionally armed, nuclear-powered submarines.

To support the transition, the US Navy has already established Naval Support Activity Stirling to provide services for personnel and families. Additionally, the USS Colorado has arrived at HMAS Stirling for a monthlong maintenance period, during which Australian civilian technicians will work alongside US specialists for the first time to test local maintenance capabilities.
