Two U.S. Navy aviators ejected from an EA-18G Growler during aircraft recovery operations aboard the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower off the coast of Virginia on Monday, September 28. The incident, characterized by the Navy as a “mishap,” reportedly involved an arresting gear failure.

The two aviators, assigned to Carrier Air Wing 3 and the “Zappers” of Electronic Attack Squadron 130, were successfully rescued by search-and-rescue personnel and returned to the ship for medical evaluation.

The mishap also resulted in injuries to several sailors on board. Reports vary on the exact number, with some sources citing four injured personnel and others reporting up to six. One sailor was transported to a hospital in the Norfolk area for non-life-threatening injuries, while others received medical care on the vessel or were flown to Naval Medical Center Portsmouth for further evaluation.

The U.S. Navy is currently investigating the cause of the incident. The USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, a Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, had recently completed a maintenance period and had been conducting flight operations in the area.
