USS George Washington arrives in Middle East to replace USS Abraham Lincoln
The aircraft carrier USS George Washington has arrived in the Arabian Sea to replace the USS Abraham Lincoln as part of a scheduled deployment in the Middle East. U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed the arrival on Wednesday, noting the vessel is operating within its area of operations to support regional deterrence.
The rotation follows significant controversy regarding the USS Abraham Lincoln, which has been on a record-breaking deployment without a port stop due to ongoing tensions with Iran. Reports from the Lincoln highlighted deteriorating living conditions, including shortages of fresh food, plumbing issues, and hygiene supply shortages. These conditions, alongside the mental health toll of a prolonged mission, have drawn criticism from Democratic legislators and raised concerns among military families.
While Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and other officials have downplayed the reports of hardship on the Lincoln, the deployment shift leaves the United States without an aircraft carrier in the Western Pacific. The transition occurs as the U.S. continues to manage a grinding asymmetrical conflict involving Iran.
