USS Gerald Ford Returns to Norfolk After 11‑Month Deployment
The U.S. Navy announced that its largest and most advanced aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald Ford, is heading back to its home port in Norfolk, Virginia, after an eleven‑month deployment spanning Europe, the Caribbean and the Middle East. The deployment, the longest for a U.S. carrier since the Vietnam War, supported operations linked to the capture of Venezuela’s former president Nicolás Maduro and the ongoing conflict with Iran, including a presence in the Red Sea.
Crew members reported several onboard problems during the tour, such as a laundry‑room fire that injured personnel, recurring toilet issues, and morale concerns that led some sailors to consider leaving the service. The Pentagon noted that the carrier’s return does not signal an immediate de‑escalation in the Middle East, as other combat groups remain deployed.
Carrier Air Wing 8, attached to the Gerald Ford strike group, logged more than 5,500 flight hours in Operation Epic Fury and over 11,800 launches across the deployment, underscoring the carrier’s operational tempo.
