HII secures $5.1B contract for USS Harry S. Truman overhaul

HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding has secured a contract valued at approximately $5.1 billion for the refueling and complex overhaul (RCOH) of the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75). The project, which is expected to conclude by November 2031, involves refueling the ship’s nuclear reactors and performing extensive modernization of its propulsion plant, combat systems, and thousands of internal compartments.

Separately, the U.S. Navy has taken preliminary acceptance of the USS John F. Kennedy (CVN 79), the second Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carrier. This milestone allows the crew to begin at-sea testing and operational training while Newport News Shipbuilding completes final systems work. The carrier is approximately 99 percent complete, with remaining tasks focused on testing the final four advanced weapons elevators. Formal delivery of the USS John F. Kennedy is scheduled for the spring of 2027.
