USTA maintains US Open match format despite late-night criticism
The United States Tennis Association (USTA) has decided to maintain its traditional US Open match format, despite criticism from players and fans regarding matches ending in the early morning hours. The schedule will continue to feature two daytime and two evening sessions on the primary courts, Arthur Ashe and Louis Armstrong.
USTA CEO Craig Tiley defended the decision, noting that the format provides fans with significant entertainment value. Tiley pointed out that while many complain about late finishes, no functional alternative solutions have been proposed, especially since organizers cannot control the duration of matches. The decision follows a marathon quarterfinal match where Ben Shelton defeated Carlos Alcaraz, concluding at approximately 3:33 AM local time.
While the match schedule remains unchanged, tournament leadership plans to implement infrastructure improvements at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. These upgrades aim to enhance fan comfort and include more shaded areas, expanded fan spaces, and additional screens throughout the complex.
