Catalan teacher unions confirm strike for first day of school

Teacher unions in Catalonia, including USTEC, CGT, Intersindical, and COS, have confirmed a strike for the first day of the school year on September 8. The mobilization follows failed negotiations with the Department of Education regarding classroom ratios, resource allocation, and labor conditions.

To mitigate the impact, the government has established minimum services. These requirements include one teacher for every three classrooms in infant, primary, and secondary education, along with one member of the management team per center. Special education centers must maintain 50% of their staff, while nursery schools must ensure 33% coverage. Additionally, half of the staff for dining, kitchen, and extracurricular services must remain on duty.

In the Balearic Islands, the Assemblea de Docents has also announced intentions to intensify mobilizations to demand increased investment in public education and to protest against classroom overcrowding and bureaucratic burdens. Meanwhile, in Valencia, unions have signaled a continuation of their struggle through assemblies and planned demonstrations to address the critical state of public teaching.
