USTR proposes additional forced‑labor tariffs on EU, China, Japan, Canada and 60 other nations

The U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) is preparing a new round of tariffs aimed at up to 60 countries that have not eliminated forced‑labour practices in the production of goods exported to the United States. The proposal calls for an additional 12.5% duty on imports from the European Union, China, Japan, Canada and other listed economies, following an investigation set to conclude on 6 July, after which a recommendation to the administration is expected.

The tariff plan includes exemptions for certain products, notably beef, and highlights broader concerns about forced‑labour compliance across global supply chains. If adopted, the measures would reshape trade flows and could increase costs for a range of imported goods, while signalling heightened U.S. enforcement of labor‑rights standards.
