Las Condes mudslide triggers state of catastrophe in Santiago

A powerful mudslide triggered by intense rainfall struck the San Carlos de Apoquindo sector of Las Condes, Santiago, on October 8. The torrent of water, mud, and debris swept away vehicles and overturned a public transport bus.

At least six people were injured in the incident, including a one-year-old child who sustained a fracture. Authorities reported that the disaster affected thousands of homes, with some reports indicating over 2,000 properties were impacted. The flooding also affected local infrastructure, including clinics and universities.

President José Antonio Kast has declared Las Condes a zone of catastrophe to facilitate the mobilization of emergency resources. Preliminary investigations by authorities suggest the mudslide may have been caused by the obstruction of two underground ducts, though the loss of vegetation from a previous summer wildfire in the area is also being considered as a contributing factor. The Metropolitan Prosecutor's Office has opened an investigation to determine potential criminal liability.
