Utah County deputy faces backlash after slamming protester

A Utah County sheriff’s deputy is facing intense public scrutiny following a confrontation with 27-year-old Aspen Azalea during a Planning Commission meeting in Provo. The incident occurred after the commission approved changes to land use ordinances that would allow data center development in specific industrial and mining zones.

Video footage of the encounter shows Deputy Phillip Crawford forcing Azalea to the ground. Azalea alleges her face was shoved into the floor, causing her jaw pain, and claims she may have suffered a concussion. She has called for the deputy to be fired. Conversely, the sheriff’s office stated that Azalea struck the deputy below the belt during the altercation, an accusation she denies.

The confrontation has gained significant traction online, with footage garnering millions of views and prompting widespread criticism regarding the officer's use of force. The group ‘UT for the People — No Tech Billionaires’ characterized the treatment of the protester as unjust, noting that tensions rose among residents immediately following the commission's vote.
