Utah crossing guard protects children from moving vehicle

A crossing guard in Lehi, Utah, narrowly prevented a collision between a vehicle and two children on September 16. Tara Sandstrom was guiding two children on scooters across the intersection of 1100 West and 1450 South when a white vehicle, which had previously been stopped, began to move forward through the crosswalk.

Sandstrom rushed into the roadway, positioning herself between the moving vehicle and the children while signaling and shouting for the driver to stop. The vehicle came to an abrupt halt, and no injuries were reported. Sandstrom stated that her “immediate instinct was to protect the kids” and noted that she felt immediate fear when she realized the vehicle was advancing toward the pedestrians.

Footage of the incident has gained significant attention online. Sandstrom used the visibility of the event to urge motorists to remain vigilant in school zones and to stay stopped until pedestrians have completely cleared the crosswalk.
