Utah Governor criticizes state board over data center and warns counties of funding risks

Utah Governor Spencer Cox has criticized the Military Installation Development Authority (MIDA) following its approval of the Stratos hyperscale data center in Box Elder County. Cox described the approval process as “not good” and characterized MIDA’s involvement in large-scale commercial projects as “mission creep,” arguing that the board has exceeded its mandate to advance military initiatives.

The Governor suggested that massive development projects should require greater oversight from the Governor’s Office and the Governor’s Office of Economic Development. The Stratos project is currently subject to legal disputes involving MIDA and Box Elder County following a failed citizen referendum.

In a separate development regarding state-local relations, Steve Waldrip, a senior adviser to Governor Cox, warned Summit and Wasatch counties that their funding could be at risk. Waldrip’s comments during a Heber City Council meeting were directed at local leaders who have opposed state development laws and growth policies. While Waldrip suggested that county funding, including road funds, could be suspended, Summit County officials stated they have received no formal notice of any such suspension.
