Utah Health Agencies Warn of Synthetic Opioid Contamination in Cat’s Claw Supplements

Utah state officials have identified potent synthetic opioid compounds in dietary supplements marketed as cat’s claw. Testing by the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food found that Buzzers’ cat’s claw tablets contain kratom‑derived alkaloids such as mitragynine pseudoindoxyl and MGM‑15, which can be more potent than morphine. The Utah Poison Control Center reported multiple severe overdoses and one death linked to these products, describing symptoms ranging from profound sedation to respiratory failure.

The Summit County Health Department issued a parallel warning, noting that smoke‑shop and online products labeled as kava or cat’s claw – including brands like Buzzers and Homiez – may also be adulterated with undisclosed synthetic opioids. Residents are advised to avoid these items, seek immediate medical help if someone is unresponsive, and use naloxone if available. The agencies continue testing and urge the public to report adverse reactions.
