Utah judge denies defense request to close Tyler Robinson murder hearing

District Judge Tony Graf in Provo, Utah, ruled that the preliminary hearing for Tyler Robinson – the man charged with the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk – will remain open to reporters and the public. The defense had sought to seal portions of the July 6‑10 hearing, arguing that intense media coverage could prejudice a future jury, but the judge found no sufficient basis to limit public access.

Prosecutors, who are pursuing the death penalty, are expected to present new evidence during the hearing to establish probable cause for a trial. This decision follows several earlier rejections by Judge Graf of the defense’s attempts to restrict cameras and to have the prosecution team recused.

Robinson, 23, has not yet entered a plea and remains in custody while the legal process continues.
