Utah kokanee salmon undergo vibrant red transformation in fall

In Utah, the seasonal transformation of kokanee salmon offers a unique wildlife viewing opportunity during the autumn months. As the leaves change color at higher elevations, these fish undergo a dramatic physical shift, changing from silver to a vibrant red as they prepare to lay eggs.

Observers can find these salmon in several locations, including Strawberry Reservoir, Jordanelle Reservoir, and the Provo River, as well as reservoirs in Summit County such as Smith, Morehouse, and Stateline. During this period, males also develop humped backs, hooked jaws, and elongated teeth.

Trina Hedrick, a sportfish coordinator with the state Division of Wildlife Resources, notes that the bright red color makes the fish highly visible. Currently, there is a catch-and-release order in place for kokanee salmon in Utah.
