Utah launches state initiative to advance quantum technology
Utah Governor Spencer Cox has signed an executive order establishing the Utah Quantum Initiative to accelerate the development, research, and commercialization of quantum technology within the state. The initiative aims to leverage Utah’s existing semiconductor, advanced manufacturing, and defense sectors to position the state as a leader in quantum computing, sensing, and communications.
To oversee this effort, the order creates the Quantum Coordination Council, a governing body led by the Governor’s Office of Economic Development. This council will integrate leaders from state government, industry, and higher education to coordinate strategy and attract private investment and federal opportunities.
The state intends to utilize its existing infrastructure, including university research teams and high-performance computing, to build a specialized workforce. The initiative is expected to impact various sectors, including national security, medicine, energy, and aerospace, by utilizing Utah’s defense assets such as Hill Air Force Base and Dugway Proving Ground for testing and deployment.
