Utah Lieutenant Governor warns of internal government election threats

Utah Lieutenant Governor Deidre Henderson, a Republican, has warned that threats to the upcoming midterm elections are increasingly originating from within the U.S. federal government. In an interview with CBS News’ 60 Minutes, Henderson stated that while previous election threats were primarily external—such as cybersecurity risks and non-state actors—current pressures involve federal officials.

Henderson, who oversees Utah's elections, reported that the Justice Department previously demanded access to statewide voter registration lists, including sensitive personal data like Social Security numbers and driver’s license numbers. She declined these requests, citing privacy concerns and a lack of clear justification from the administration.

Additionally, Henderson noted she is under investigation by the Justice Department regarding the potential for noncitizens to vote in Utah, with officials suggesting she could face prosecution or imprisonment if noncitizens are found to have voted. Henderson has directly challenged claims regarding election fraud and has resisted efforts to impose new restrictions on mail-in voting.
