Utah national parks report 23 heat-related rescues

Rangers at Arches and Canyonlands national parks in Utah have responded to 23 heat-related search-and-rescue incidents through August 4. Of these emergencies, 11 occurred at Arches and 12 at Canyonlands.

National Park Service officials warn that the intense sunshine, low humidity, and high elevation in southeastern Utah can lead to rapid dehydration and illness. To mitigate risks, rangers recommend avoiding strenuous outdoor activities between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. and planning hikes for the cooler morning or evening hours.

For hydration, officials advise front-country hikers to carry two to three liters of water per person, while backcountry travelers should carry at least four liters. Additionally, visitors in Southern Utah should remain vigilant during the monsoon season, which typically runs from July through September, due to the risk of dangerous flash flooding in canyons.
