Utah parents convicted in death of 18-month-old daughter

In Utah, Carrie and Michelle Marrey were convicted on Friday for the death of their 18-month-old daughter, Ruby, in March 2025. The court findings detailed extreme neglect and a profound “disregard for the child’s life.”

Evidence presented during the case revealed that Ruby was left in her crib for the vast majority of the day while her parents worked. During the final four days of her life, the infant was reportedly out of her crib for only six hours in total. When police entered the home, they found the crib filled with trash and food scraps. Despite the room temperature being 25 degrees Celsius, the child was found covered in multiple blankets and wearing long-sleeved pajamas.

On the night leading to her death, Ruby was reportedly crying and struggling to breathe. Rather than seeking medical assistance, the parents allegedly played loud music to drown out the sound of her distress. Ruby was found dead the following morning, having died from dehydration and malnutrition.
