Utah postal worker charged with destroying mail including 300 ballots
The U.S. Department of Justice has announced charges against Damon Mattai Shea, a 34-year-old postal worker in Utah, for the mishandling and destruction of mail. Shea admitted to throwing a batch of mail into a church dumpster, stating he did so out of laziness and frustration while attempting to lighten his workload while covering a colleague's route.
While Shea claimed he believed the discarded items were merely advertising materials, prosecutors stated the batch included 300 primary election ballots sent via mail. Shea, who has no prior criminal record, faces charges related to the delay or destruction of mail. Acting Deputy Attorney General Trent McCarter and Attorney General Todd Blans characterized the incident as a threat to the integrity of the electoral system.
