Utah school districts and cities propose $93 million in property tax hikes

The Utah Taxpayers Association identified 67 local taxing entities that have filed proposals to raise a combined $93.58 million in property‑tax revenue. The three largest proposals account for nearly half of the total: Granite School District seeks $21.1 million, which would add about $125 to the annual tax bill of an average $579,000 home; Salt Lake City proposes $13.8 million, roughly $102 per average $703,000 home; and Cache County School District aims for $8.6 million, about $211 per average $549,000 home.

All proposals are subject to Truth‑in‑Taxation hearings held throughout August, giving taxpayers the chance to comment before elected officials vote. Hearings begin on Aug. 3 and run through Aug. 27, with the largest proposals scheduled for Aug. 6 (Cache County), Aug. 11 (Salt Lake City) and Aug. 18 (Granite). The Utah Taxpayers Association warned that “property‑tax increases should never happen on autopilot,” quoting its president Billy Hesterman, who urged residents to attend the hearings and ask how the additional revenue will be used. Eleven entities are holding hearings for a fourth consecutive year and nine for a third consecutive year, highlighting a pattern of recurring tax‑increase requests.
