Utah wildfire costs reach $33 million amid intense fire season

Utah is facing an intense wildfire season, with costs already reaching an estimated $33 million. State officials warn that this figure could increase by another third as the season continues into September.

More than 532,000 acres have burned across the state so far, marking Utah’s second-largest wildfire year on record. Factors contributing to the severity include record-low snowpack, warm winter temperatures, and persistent drought conditions. Wade Snyder, deputy state fire management officer with the Division of Forestry, Fire & State Lands, noted that inflation and the increasing size of fires are driving up expenses.

Governor Spencer Cox has indicated that the state has built a wildfire fund of more than $120 million to prepare for such seasons, and officials are considering utilizing other state funding sources if necessary. The Rocky Canyon Fire near Henefer is among the significant incidents impacting local communities.
