Utah wildfires scorch 455,000 acres, officials urge home protection

As of early August 2026, Utah has experienced 747 wildfires that have burned more than 455,000 acres across the state. Of those blazes, 374 were human‑caused, 317 sparked by lightning and 56 remain under investigation. The Widemouth 2 Fire east of Fillmore alone has grown to over 68,000 acres, prompting evacuations and threatening hundreds of structures. Governor Spencer Cox warned residents that fire conditions are “extremely dangerous” and urged avoidance of activities that could create sparks. Utah State University Extension is advising households to develop evacuation plans, assemble emergency kits, clear combustible vegetation, and consider fire‑resistant landscaping and building materials.

State legislators are also pushing new policies to improve wildfire management. Proposed bills such as the Utah Wildfire Research Institute Act and the Fix Our Forests Act aim to give local officials greater authority over forest‑fuel reduction, expand Good Neighbor Authority, and strengthen coordination between federal and state agencies.
