Utah wildlife officials euthanize bear in Ogden

black bear wildlife management euthanasia human-wildlife conflict drought

The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources euthanized a bear in Ogden after it was spotted in a Newgate Mall parking lot on Sunday. The animal had been captured and relocated from the Kamas area only five days prior.

State officials decided to humanely euthanize the bear because it repeatedly entered populated areas. Officials noted that bear-related incidents in the state have more than doubled compared to last year. This increase is attributed to unusual weather patterns, including extreme heat and drought, which have depleted natural food sources like berries and acorns that make up 90% of a black bear’s diet.
