Utah winter sports executive Colin Hilton dies amid Olympic bidding efforts

The death of Colin Hilton, a veteran winter sports executive, marks a significant loss for the efforts to bring the Winter Olympics back to Utah. Hilton, who died at age 58, served as the president and CEO of the Utah Olympic Legacy Foundation and was a key figure in the organizing committee for the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics.

In a related academic analysis of the 2002 Games, research from Utah State University examined the economic and distributional impacts on host counties. The study found that the 2002 Games generated an average of 1,084 leisure and hospitality jobs per host county and a marginally significant increase in tourism and hospitality GDP. However, the research also noted that poverty rates for children and all ages rose in host counties relative to control groups, leading to recommendations for targeted policies regarding living wages and local business procurement for the upcoming 2034 Utah Olympic Games.
