Utah witnesses seek benefits after Charlie Kirk shooting

Approximately 173 witnesses have applied for state victim benefits following the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University on September 10, 2025.

Kirk was participating in a Q&A forum before an estimated 6,000 students when he was struck by a single shot from a high-powered hunting rifle fired from approximately 150 yards away. Witnesses described a scene of sudden chaos and panic following the impact.

Chyleen Richey, Director of the Utah Office for Victims of Crime, stated that at least 500 witnesses initially approached her office seeking assistance for mental health and trauma support. Officials are currently working to determine the specific ‘zone of danger’ required to qualify individuals for state compensation.
