Ute Freudenberg receives Weimar Prize for cultural contributions
Singer Ute Freudenberg has been awarded the 2026 Weimar Prize for her contributions to the cultural reputation of her birthplace, Weimar. The ceremony took place at the Weimarhalle, attended by approximately 650 guests, including fans from across Germany.
Mayor Peter Kleine described the award as the city’s highest distinction, noting that Freudenberg has maintained a connection to her hometown for decades while representing it on major stages. The laudatory speech was delivered by singer and television presenter Kim Fisher. The event also featured an instrumental performance of ‘Jugendliebe’, Freudenberg’s most famous song, by the Weimar State Orchestra brass ensemble.
Born in Weimar in 1956, Freudenberg studied at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music. She rose to prominence in the GDR as a member of the band Elefant. After moving to Düsseldorf in 1984, she worked as a studio singer and performer before returning to Weimar in 1996 to found the Ute-F-Live-Band. Her career achievements include receiving the ‘Goldene Henne’ for her life's work in 2023.
