Utica residents warned of potential water discoloration

The Utica Fire Department will begin its annual fall fire hydrant inspections on Monday, August 31. The inspections are scheduled to continue through Wednesday, September 30, with crews working Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and Fridays from 9 a.m. to noon.

During the inspection and flushing process, sediment that naturally settles in water mains may be stirred up, potentially causing tap water to appear brown, yellow, or otherwise discolored for some residents. Officials advise residents to check their water before drinking or doing laundry. If cold water is discolored, residents should avoid using hot water to prevent sediment from entering hot water tanks.

Authorities have clarified that there is no boil water advisory in effect, the water supply is not contaminated, and normal water pressure will be maintained throughout the process.
