Romania faces water security risks amid drought and supply issues

Romania is facing significant water security challenges due to a prolonged drought. As of August 9, 2026, the 39 major reservoirs monitored by Apele Române and Hidroelectrica have a filling coefficient of 70.63%. This level is projected to drop to 66% by the end of August. The drought has already impacted 181 localities with centralized water systems, with Alba, Neamț, and Bihor being among the most affected counties. Additionally, seven river sectors have reached Tier III, the highest level of water restriction.

In Curtea de Argeș, health authorities reported that water samples showed free residual chlorine levels exceeding the maximum permitted limit of 0.50 mg/l. Meanwhile, global data highlights the uneven distribution of freshwater; while Romania generates approximately 42.38 billion cubic meters of renewable freshwater annually (representing 0.1% of the global total), countries like Brazil hold a massive 13.2% of the world's supply.
