Utility providers urge tree pruning near power lines to prevent outages

Utility providers and local authorities are emphasizing the importance of tree pruning near power lines to prevent service interruptions and safety hazards.

In Costa Rica, the cooperative Coopelesca has advised residents to avoid planting trees directly under electrical lines. The organization noted that many service emergencies are caused by branches or trees making contact with lines, particularly during adverse weather. Coopelesca encourages citizens to report branches near power lines via their telephone line to facilitate preventive pruning.

In Mexico, the Director of Public Services in Ahome, Iván Roberto Gálvez, clarified the division of responsibilities regarding tree maintenance. While smaller trees without wire contact are handled by municipal Public Services, reports involving electrical lines must be directed to the Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE). Local authorities noted a current limitation in their ability to assist with larger pruning tasks due to a lack of specialized crane equipment.
