Utility providers warn of risks from illegal electricity connections

Utility companies in Peru and Argentina are warning of the legal and physical dangers posed by illegal electricity connections and the manipulation of metering systems.

In Huánuco, Peru, Electrocentro has identified approximately 370 cases of electricity theft this year. These incidents involve clandestine connections and unauthorized interventions in electrical installations across residential and commercial sectors. The company reported that the Public Ministry has already filed accusations for aggravated theft in two cases currently before the judiciary. Authorities noted that these practices pose significant risks to life and safety.

In Trelew, Argentina, the Cooperativa Eléctrica de Trelew has issued an alert regarding the hazards of unauthorized infrastructure manipulation. The cooperative warned that precarious installations increase the risk of electrocution, short circuits, and fires. Additionally, these irregular connections degrade service quality for paying customers by causing voltage fluctuations and unscheduled interruptions. The cooperative is encouraging anonymous reports of irregular connections and vandalism to protect the electrical network.
