Utility rates rise for customers in Florida and New Jersey

Utility customers in Jacksonville, Florida, and New Jersey are facing changes to their energy and water bills this October.

In Jacksonville, Jacksonville Electric Authority (JEA) rates have increased to address a projected $107 million shortfall. Electric rates rose by 6.2%, while water and sewer rates increased by 8%. The average residential customer is expected to see an increase of approximately $8 per month. Critics attribute part of the financial gap to a $40 million deal approved in June 2025, which increased the utility's required contribution to the city's general fund.

In New Jersey, Atlantic City Electric customers will see a net change of approximately $1 per month. While distribution charges are expected to drop by $9, these savings are offset by a $7 increase in electricity supply costs, a $2 increase in transmission charges, and a $1 increase in surcharges. The supply cost increase is attributed to seasonal wholesale electricity prices managed by PJM.
