Utility theft of water meters and wiring disrupts services in Brazil

The theft of water meters and electrical wiring is causing significant disruptions to essential services and residential properties in Brazil. In Campo Grande, the utility provider Águas Guariroba has already replaced 2,170 stolen water meters this year. These thefts have directly impacted public health, with local family health units facing power outages due to stolen wiring, forcing the suspension of medical consultations and patient rescheduling.

In other regions served by Sabesp, the theft of meters—often driven by the value of the metal components—leaves properties vulnerable to water shortages and potential structural damage. To avoid being held financially responsible for replacement costs, consumers are advised to file a police report (Boletim de Ocorrência) immediately. Following the report, the utility company can be contacted to request a replacement, which typically has a regulatory deadline of 48 hours. During the interim, billing continues based on the consumer's previous average usage.
