UTM v5.0.4 Beta Adds Experimental DirectX 11 Support for Windows 11 on macOS
The UTM Project released the beta of UTM v5.0.4, a virtualization app for macOS and iOS devices. The update introduces experimental DirectX 11 graphics support for Windows 11 ARM64 virtual machines by using a new Windows‑GPU driver called Triton and a Direct3D translation layer named Neptune. The feature enables hardware‑accelerated graphics, though game compatibility remains limited.
UTM continues to rely on the open‑source QEMU emulator and Apple’s Virtualization Framework. The beta also adds Vulkan 1.3 support for Linux guests via the VirtIO‑Venus driver and OpenGL 4.1 support on macOS through Apple’s Core‑OpenGL backend. Development of the Triton driver was assisted by Anthropic’s “Claude for Open Source” program, which provided extensive AI resources at a cost of over $11,000 in API tokens, and the developer reported writing no code himself.
