UTMB 2026: Ultra-trail festival sparks debate in Chamonix
The 23rd edition of the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc (UTMB) is underway, featuring a series of eight races across France, Italy, and Switzerland. The event attracts approximately 10,000 runners and up to 100,000 spectators to the Chamonix valley. The flagship 176 km race, which involves nearly 10,000 meters of elevation gain, is scheduled to begin this Friday.
While the event is a prestigious milestone for ultra-endurance athletes, it has sparked significant local debate. Residents and officials in Chamonix have expressed concerns regarding the massive influx of people, which has led to traffic congestion, difficulty accessing local services, and rising costs. Chamonix Mayor François-Xavier Laffin noted that the event’s phenomenal growth has exceeded the town’s capacity, suggesting a need to redefine the race to ensure it remains sustainable for the local community.
Logistical challenges have also been reported during the preliminary races, such as the MCC, where participants noted insufficient water availability at certain high-altitude points. Despite these tensions, the UTMB remains a central pillar of the global trail running circuit, managed by the UTMB Group.
