Utrecht fish migration initiative launches sixth edition

The sixth edition of the ‘Bell for Fish’ initiative has launched in Utrecht, Netherlands. Created by ecologist Mark van Heukelum in 2021, the project uses a live underwater camera at the Weerdsluis lock to help fish migrate toward the Kromme Rijn river for spring spawning.

Because boat traffic is low in early spring, locks often remain closed, which can trap migrating fish. Through a live stream, internet users can press a special button to signal a lock keeper to open the gates, allowing the fish to continue their journey.

The project has gained significant international attention. Last year, the stream was viewed by 2.3 million people globally, and the project's website recorded 30 million visits. The initiative has been featured on programs such as ‘Last Week Tonight with John Oliver’ and has inspired musical tributes.
