Utrecht implements circular grants and biodiesel vehicles amid grid constraints

In the province of Utrecht, €25,000 remains available to support circular resident initiatives. Managed by the Natuur en Milieufederatie Utrecht (NMU), these funds aim to encourage activities such as tool sharing, clothing swaps, repair cafés, and community sharing of cars or bicycles to reduce waste and promote resource efficiency.

Separately, the municipality of Utrecht has announced plans to purchase 25 biodiesel-powered garbage trucks due to insufficient electricity grid capacity for fully electric vehicles. Because of this grid congestion, the municipality intends to request an exemption to operate these biodiesel vehicles within the city’s zero-emission zone. Transport en Logistiek Nederland (TLN) has responded by calling for more realistic zero-emission policies, arguing that transport companies should not be penalized for infrastructure limitations beyond their control.
