Utrecht provides public transport discounts following service failures

The province of Utrecht is providing a 50 percent discount on public transport for U-OV passengers for a two-month period from September 21 to November 20. This measure is funded by fines imposed on transport providers due to service issues, including delays, canceled trips, and inaccurate travel information.

The discount applies to travelers using OVpay and includes significant reductions for products such as ‘U-OV Max Dag’, ‘U-OV Max Maand’, and ‘U-OV Dal Vrij’. Additionally, passengers with annual subscriptions will receive separate compensation ranging from 39.30 to 268.55 euros.

The province noted that while these discounts serve as compensation, the primary priority remains improving the reliability of the service schedule. Transdev, which operates under the name U-OV in Houten, IJsselstein, and Nieuwegein, was fined 1.5 million euros for these service failures.
