Utrecht province reports high prosperity despite housing and nature concerns
According to the regional Monitor of Broad Prosperity from Statistics Netherlands (CBS), Utrecht province ranks among the highest in the country for current well-being. Key drivers include a strong economic position, high disposable income, high labor participation, and good public transport accessibility. Residents also report generally good health and high levels of social and human capital, including education levels and trust in institutions.
However, the report highlights significant challenges for the future. The housing market remains a major bottleneck due to high prices, making it difficult for residents to find suitable homes. Additionally, population growth is increasing pressure on the living environment, evidenced by a decline in natural area per thousand inhabitants from 22.8 to 21.4 hectares between 2016 and 2023. Concerns regarding the impacts of climate change also persist.
