Utrecht restaurant hit by explosion amid history of extortion
A restaurant on the Amsterdamsestraatweg in the Zuilen district of Utrecht was struck by a large explosion around 01:00 AM. The blast caused significant structural damage to the building's facade and shattered windows in the restaurant and nearby residential apartments. One neighbor reported that the shockwave was powerful enough to cause lights in a nearby home to fail.
No injuries were reported following the incident. Emergency services, including the fire department, responded to the scene; while there was an initial concern regarding a gas leak, the area was deemed safe after inspection. Police have cordoned off the area to conduct a forensic investigation and are analyzing surveillance footage to identify those responsible.
This establishment has a history of being targeted by explosive violence. In 2023, an explosion at the same location led to the conviction of a 19-year-old man, who received a three-year prison sentence. That incident was linked to an attempt to extort 10,000 euros from the owner. Residents also noted a suspected explosion at the site during the previous autumn.
