Utsunomiya to host new STEAM-based free school for elementary students

Viling Inc. has announced the opening of ‘Stemon Free School <Elementary Division>’ in Utsunomiya, Tochigi Prefecture, scheduled for September 1, 2026. The facility is designed specifically for elementary school students who experience school refusal or difficulty attending traditional schools.

The school will operate with a small capacity of 10 students to ensure psychological safety. It utilizes a hybrid educational model that combines STEAM education—including programming and hands-on making—with fundamental academic support such as individualized learning and specialized mathematics instruction.

The initiative aims to address the rising number of school-refusing students in Japan by providing a ‘third place’ outside of the home that balances emotional rest with meaningful learning experiences to build self-esteem.
