Uttam Kumar birth centenary marked by tributes and film festivals

India is observing the birth centenary of legendary Bengali cinema actor Uttam Kumar, known as the ‘Mahanayak’. Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the actor, describing him as a timeless icon whose versatile performances have connected with audiences across generations.

In West Bengal, the state government has launched a four-day commemorative programme titled ‘Satabarshe Mahanayak: A Century of Stardom’. The celebrations include the garlanding of statues, the unveiling of a 20-foot cut-out at the Bijoli cinema hall, and an exhibition of the actor’s life and work at Gaganendra Shilpa Pradarshashala.

Key events include a film festival at Nandan and Radha Studio, featuring Satyajit Ray’s ‘Nayak’ as the inaugural screening. Additionally, a foundation stone will be laid for the Uttam Kumar Film Centre in New Town. The commemorations also involve the inauguration of a commemorative stamp and envelope, alongside musical programmes and discussions featuring various Tollywood personalities.
