Uttar Pradesh Assembly grapples with opposition unrest and Sambhal violence report

Speaker Satish Mahana said the opposition’s conduct in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly was "very unfortunate" and stressed that the house can function only with cooperation from both sides. He recounted spending over two hours hearing opposition concerns and warned that without their collaboration the session could not proceed. Mahana also criticised expelled MLA Sachin Yadav for refusing to remove a picture of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath from the chamber, describing his behaviour as disappointing.

During the same monsoon session, a judicial inquiry commission chaired by retired Justice Devendra Kumar Arora submitted a report on the 24 November 2024 violence at the Shahi Jama Masjid in Sambhal. The three‑member panel, which included former DGP Arvind Kumar Jain and ex‑IAS officer Amit Mohan Prasad, concluded the clash was a pre‑planned conspiracy aimed at portraying the ASI survey as a threat to the mosque. The report named local political figures and mosque officials for allegedly mobilising a crowd that shouted slogans and turned violent, and it warned that such actions undermine the rule of law.
