Uttar Pradesh ATS investigates funding of 16,000 madrasas

The Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) has launched an investigation into the bank accounts, funding sources, and student records of approximately 16,000 madrasas across the state. The probe follows intelligence received in late August 2026 and specifically targets institutions that operate without government financial assistance.

Of the 24,962 madrasas in Uttar Pradesh, 16,513 are recognized and 8,449 are unrecognized. While 558 recognized institutions receive government grants, the majority of the state's madrasas rely on private funding. ATS officials are examining bank transactions to trace income and expenditure, including potential funds from local or foreign sources.

Investigators are also reviewing student enrollment details and residential information. The inquiry is being conducted across all districts of the state. As of the latest reports, no significant suspicious activity has been identified, and the investigation remains ongoing.
