Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi launches 35‑crore sapling ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ drive

Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath inaugurated the state‑wide ‘Mega Tree Plantation Drive’ (Plantation Mahayagya 2026) from Gorakhpur, planting a sapling under the centrally‑launched ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign. The drive targets the planting of more than 35 crore saplings in 2026, with the Forest Department handling the largest share and 27 government departments coordinated for implementation. Deputy chief minister Brajesh Pathak urged citizens to plant trees in their mothers’ names and pledged full government support.

The state reports that the 40‑crore‑sapling target has been reached, framing the milestone as a symbol of gratitude to Mother Earth and a commitment to future generations. Over the past 9.5 years Uttar Pradesh has planted roughly 247 crore saplings, increasing forest cover by 559 sq km. Central agriculture minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan announced the formation of a “Vriksh Mitra Parivar” to mobilise volunteers for the campaign. The initiative is presented as a major environmental, cultural and economic effort, aiming to improve air quality, biodiversity and create green‑jobs across the state.
