Uttar Pradesh expands civil aviation network with new airports and terminals

The Uttar Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, is rapidly expanding the state's civil aviation infrastructure. Projects at six locations—Gorakhpur, Agra, Kanpur, Aligarh, Moradabad and Shravasti—are advancing with new civil terminals, airport expansions and land acquisitions.

In Gorakhpur, a new civil terminal is being built after an MoU with the Airports Authority of India and the Ministry of Defence transferred 42.14 acres of air‑force land; the airport now handles about 12 flights daily. At Agra, construction of a new terminal is about 60% complete, with a total of 144.5 acres secured. Kanpur's new terminal, costing roughly ₹150 crore, has been inaugurated and serves four flights, with a proposal for an additional 100 acres. Aligarh's expansion is funded by ₹738.6 crore for the acquisition of 275.74 hectares. The Moradabad airstrip was converted to a full airport in 2024, and technical work is underway for its further expansion. Shravasti Airport, also completed in 2024 under the Regional Connectivity Scheme, has acquired 218 hectares of the required 226.75 hectares, backed by ₹350 crore.

The government aims to link the state's regions more closely, boosting tourism, industry, investment and employment through enhanced air connectivity.
