Uttar Pradesh government announces millet procurement plan
The Uttar Pradesh government has announced a major procurement plan for the 2026-27 Kharif marketing season, focusing on millets including maize, pearl millet (bajra), and sorghum (jowar). Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed officials to ensure that farmers receive payments via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) into their registered bank accounts within 48 hours of selling their produce.
To facilitate this, the state is establishing 455 dedicated procurement centers: 300 for pearl millet, 80 for sorghum, and 75 for maize. The government aims to procure a total of 285,000 metric tons of coarse grains. The specific Minimum Support Prices (MSP) have been set as follows:
• Pearl millet: ₹2,900 per quintal • Maize: ₹2,410 per quintal • Hybrid sorghum: ₹4,023 per quintal • Maldandi sorghum: ₹4,073 per quintal
The procurement process, which utilizes digital and biometric verification through e-PoP machines to eliminate middlemen, is scheduled to run through December 31, 2026.
